Tropical Tiki Paradise

Orlando, Florida

The overall goal was to incorporate a new addition to classic home and update the backyard area to match your family needs and style. The existing large Oak will remain and it’s roots will be properly pruned by a certified arborist prior to the construction of the addition. This will aide in the long-term health of the tree. A new Live Oak tree has been proposed nearby to be prepared for the eventual downturn of the existing tree. We located it as close to the property line as possible, this keeps it safe from being torn down by the city right-of-way.

We designed the patio space to work with all of the existing conditions including doorways and grade changes. A small retaining wall may be needed around the oak tree after grades are verified. The main patio space will be 1-2” lower than the finished floor elevation of the addition. The firepit area steps up 10-12” to the natural high point of the yard and tucked below the oak tree. The lower terrace features an outdoor sofa area with a TV. The raised firepit area behind creates an amphitheater effect. The pass through window features a bar counter and room for four barstools. Off the main door, a metal pergola tucks against the building façade. The pergola can feature roll down mosquito screens on three sides if desired. Casual outdoor dining is featured under the pergola and nearest the connection to the kitchen. The pergola space is tucked into small landscape beds to feel more intimate and the rest of the patio space opens into the lawn area.

In addition to the new Live Oak, we have proposed a Tulip Poplar where the old tree once stood. This is a fast growing shade tree and will provide afternoon shade on the patio space. We have also proposed a few Cabbage Palms near the pergola to provide direct shade almost all day long.

We understand the importance of remaining connected to the neighbors and the public realm. However, with a corner lot and building restrictions we wanted to provide a natural security barrier. As a solution that is not a fence or hedge, we proposed a casual bed of palm trees and ornamental grasses. This defines the space as private without feeling like neighbors are being blocked out. A fence is proposed along the western property line to provide separation from the duplex next door.

We designed a landscape bed along the rear of the yard. This is a simple, colorful, and fun screening bed that will block some of the neighbor’s utility area and provide a beautiful perimeter to the yard. The rest of the yard has been preserved as a lawn for future children.

This design plays into the family’s modern tiki vibes with a Florida fun twist. We have incorporated some tropicals that feature color and some natives that will help the yard fit in with the neighborhood.

This design will require yearly maintenance but no more than that of similar residences in the area. The plant palette features all Florida Native or Florida Friendly plants that are suitable for our local climate. This design is considered low maintenance. Irrigation is recommended for the first three growing seasons but the plant palette is considered drought tolerant.
