Modern Tropical

Audubon Park, Orlando, Florida

The overall goal for this Orlando landscape design was to create a space that matched the clients design style and personality. These awesome clients are making this a DIY landscape project and will be phasing the installation. This design is a very modern tropical and Florida eclectic blend that provides tons of color and increases curb appeal. For the front yard we proposed a new layout for the raised planter bed in the front yard. The stacked block wall along the driveway will be replaced with a new poured in place concrete wall and will tie into the corner of the house. The existing white brick wall will be removed where it is damaged and tied into the new concrete wall. It can all be painted to match the house. The removal of the planter “finger” opens up the circulation and creates a better flow to the front door. Until the new walls are built, (5) Foxtail Ferns can be used in the “finger” to tie into the rest of the proposed landscape. The two palms in their planter bed will continue to be a problem at the roofline, so we recommend removing them and have included an accent palm in their place that will stay small. New landscape beds are proposed along the facade and at the sidewalk edge. This provides separation from the public realm and creates an additional space for the family to play and enjoy. For the side walk-ways we have proposed salt-rock concrete pads with 6” bands of Mexican Beach Pebble between them for all walkway areas. The pads should start centered at each door way and evenly spaced to fill in. The pool deck will be resurfaced to match the new concrete patio. Salt-rock finish is preferred and broom finish with 6” troweled edges is another option. The pool itself will be refinished with PebbleTec or Diamond-Brite. At this time, new steps, sun shelf, and benches can be added to the interior of the pool. The old patio shall be removed and replaced with concrete pads and pebble. A new channel drain shall be installed between the pool deck and patio. A new lawn panel replaces the old paving to the right side of the pool. The junction box shall be relocated near the pool equipment. The lawn panel leads into a coffee nook tucked into the existing plantings. A concrete wall defines the space and lush plantings beyond complete the space. A built-in wood bench is located along the wall and a concrete patio provides enough space to fit a bistro set. A wood deck is proposed in the rear yard and connects to the pool deck and coffee nook. Plantings are proposed in this area to screen the neighboring shed and un-wantables. A 6’x12’ shed is located in the corner near the existing Lady Palms. Local code requires the shed to be 5’ offset from the property lines. An outdoor shower with louvered screen wall is proposed at the existing water source. A concrete patio ties the spaces together and provides more space at the shallow end of the pool. This design is a lush and colorful Florida Friendly style. Plants such as Foxtail Fern, Hawaiian Ti, and Coontie were used along the façade and throughout the yard to achieve a Tropical Modern aesthetic. The plant palette features all Florida Native or Florida Friendly plants that are suitable for our local climate.
